Finally decided that this year we'll go to Iceland. We've been wanting to for ages, but the cost has always put us off!
So any ideas on 'must sees' and 'must do's' would be appreciated.
Probably going to use frequent flyer scheme miles for the flights.
Not sure if we should hire a car and do our own thing, or go on an organised tour or a combination of the 2.
Time available is maximum 2 weeks (including 3 weekends), but we realise Iceland is expensive, so if we can do what we want in a shorter time it would be best.
So any ideas would be appreciated, especially any moneysaving ones
We have used 'wilderness hostels' on previous holidays, so don't mind occasional lack of 'niceties'!!
Planning to go end of June/early July.

You can see Reykjavik in an afternoon - it's tiny!
The best thing we did was to hire a car (it will seem expensive, but it's worth it) and tour around the 'Golden Circle' at our own pace. Thingvellir was breathtaking.
The Blue Lagoon is incdredible and a 'must do'. We also went pony trekking over the lava fields, which was great fun!
The problem I found was that it's really easy to make plans before you go, but that the weather can make it impossible to get to where you were planning to be... We had to totally change our ideas, so come up with some alternatives before you go.
Good, reliable and cheap flights from Stansted with http://www.icelandexpress.co.uk
Take booze from the uk, sweets from the uk and as many snacks as you can - it's a VERY expensive place!0 -

Were there any issues with driving yourself around the Golden Circle? Did you have to pay parking at any of the sites, road signs easy, etc?0 -
Don't forget to go to the geysars and gull foss. As above Blue lagoon definately a must, but remember not to put your head in the water for too long or your hair looks like a matted ball for a week.
If you go out for a meal in Reykjavik, we found a student type coffee shop/bar which was resonable and good food, Downtown opposite a large supermarket. Another place to eat is in the supermarkets, you can buy the food and cook it in their microwaves then sit the windows. Otherwise we paid last year £3.50 for a coffee - average type bar and £8.50 a glass for wine £47 a bottle. I am not joking!!
There is also a a open top bus trip round Reykjavik about £8 and trips from the harbour whale watching. My advice have a big breakfast, try to pack your self some sandwiches if you have a buffet breakfast. Take a couple of refillable water continers. If you drink, there is a duty free shop in the airport as you get off the plane but found Stantead cheaper.0 -
Go to tripadvisor.com - they've got loads of info on hotels and things to see - It is an american site but lots of British people post feedback too0
