Hello! I work in Guiseley and there's a train station about 1min out of the town centre with a direct link to Leeds City Centre. Your best bet would be to rent somewhere in the centre or just outside on a good bus route. Chapel Allerton/Moortown/Roundhay have great links by bus into the city and from there you can get the train.
As you're both students, Headingley and Hyde Park would be good for the student lifestyle and rent prices. The bus links into the city are good here too, and if you'd prefer, you can get a bus from Headingley direct to Guiseley.
If you'd prefer somewhere a bit in between, Woodhouse is a 10min walk from the city, 5mins from Hyde Park and is much cheaper than other student areas in Leeds. The downside is it's not a very 'nice' area, but I lived there for 2 years and the only incident was a smashed car window. Not the best, but depends how much you're willing to spend. If you want to be close to the city you won't get cheaper than Woodhouse!0
