TBH I think you should review your business terms for small jobs of less than say £1,000, with both private individuals and businesses.
I don't think it would be unreasonable to ask for cash /cheque settlement upon completion of the job.
After all if you had a tradesman to do a home job for you, I'm sure you'd expect to settle up immediately.
  • I run a small joinery and building business with my husband. In our first year of trading a customer did not pay us £1400.

We ended up taking him to court and getting a charging order on his house - we spent around £400 getting all this and we still have not been paid.

At the time we were really struggling for cashflow and it nearly finished us. We learnt some lessons though and although we still dont generally ask for a deposit, we are more careful about who we do work for (it has never happened again - yet)

Generally we find that larger businesses take longer to pay. I now add on an administrational charge (to businesses), with a note to the customer to remove that charge if they pay before the due date.

I feel for you, I really do.

Make friends withe the person at accounts payable, and just say "I am chasing payment for invoice xxx do you have a payment date for this", and follow it up. And more importantly keep on top of your oustanding invoices, cash flow is king!.
