Hi, can anyone point me in the direction of a free download that will let me play AVI. files.

WMP 10 does play avi files
Try Tools Options File Types, select all.

Wmp does play, sometimes you need new codecs though. Its pants wmp anyhow very heavy, memory and resources. I really detest the thing its awful player.
I use these
VLC player need no codecs

Zoom player can play dvd's

Media player Classic bare player but does the job

Download gspot-> http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ then open the file with it and it will tell you what codecs are needed and if you have them0

Could be a codec problem try vlc it migt work, it plays things most players wont play without certain codecs. Gspot is good program that shows the codec, bitrate of a avi file.0
