How to get your site onto Search Engines

If a related site is ranked high in search listings already, see if you can get a link to your site on the highly ranked site - that way Google will index the highly ranked site, "see" the link to your site and index your site. I think you may also get rated higher if you have a link from another highly ranked site.
Adding your URL is a start, although your site won't appear immediately and it may appear on perhaps the 10th page until your hits start increasing.
Also, think about the keywords that people will type into Google and repeat them throughout your homepage. For example, don't repeat your company name 5 times because unless someone knows your company and it's name, they aren't going to type it into Google. Instead, they will type in the service/product they want.
Don't use index pages with "click here to enter" or "intro" pages as search engines don't like them and won't index your site properly.
I have also found that if you use meta descriptions and keywords in your homepage, the search engine will find them and index your site accordingly. Google used the description of your site as a brief summary, otherwise it picks out text from the homepage which isn't always reliable. The meta tags go inside your<head> (tags here)</head>
tags, and look like this:<meta name="keywords" content="Enter comma seperated list of keywords between quotes"> <meta name="description" content="Enter brief description between quotes.">
Yahoo can be a little tricky to get listed on because they have a "selection" procedure so I believe you have to manually submit your site and then someone at Yahoo looks at your site and deems whether it is appropriate etc.
I hope this helps.0 -

Another thing I should add is that flash doesn't work either, search engines can't interpret the text in the "movie" because it is covered up with RAM-using, computer-slowing transitions and other unnecessary stuff...0 -

1)
Another point about Google - the SANDBOX.
The term "Sandbox Effect" applies to the idea that all new websites have their ratings placed in a holding tank until such time is deemed appropriate before a ranking can commence. The usual holding period seems to be between 90 and 120 days before a site would start obtaining rank from reciprocal or back linking.

Another reason dmoz is important, see this
http://www.bruceclay.com/searchenginerelationshipchart.htm
TAKE NOTE OF THE COLOUR OF THE ARROWS on the page of the above link. Dmoz even with its faults is very important to get a listing in if you can. Apart from getting direct feeds into the biggest players search results, the Dmoz index is syndicated in its entirety on 1000's of websites Worldwide. One listing there gets you 1000s of links pointing at your website. I used to run a script on one of my sites that syndicated Dmoz dynamically into my site. All of these pages were spiderable and did get visited alot. Times that effect over thousands of websites and the power of Dmoz is soon realised.

Quickest way of getting your site listed is to use Google Adwords
https://adwords.google.com/select/
this is pay per click, but it can work in your favour if you target a niche and get some low click prices. It can be done. The post above about Dmoz is still very important though aswell. Adwords, short term whilst site is getting listed and positioned then later in the sites life let some of the natural traffic from search engines flow.
