Insurance in a shared house

hi,
Ages ago I moved into a rented shared house, somewhere in my contract it states that I am supposed to buy contents insurance. I never got round to it and he's never actually asked for any proof. I am unsure of the risks, whats the cost likely to be etc.
Please can anyone advice.

Hi there
Based on the information you have given, it is not possible to estimate your premium.
I suggest you try Endsleigh Insurance for a quotation, as they deal with students and shared houses.
Once you have their quote, get quotes from elsewhere and see how they compare. In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0 -
hiya,
what info would help?? I got a quotation from Endsleigh but I have nothing to conpare it too, no other companies advertise that they offer insurance in shared house and then to make it even more complicated i'm a student but only until May/June as I graduate.

Insurance is based on the post code and the type of insurance required ..
Why the landlord would require house insurance is to cover your tenants liability .
If you take out an contents insurance make sure its includes all tenants( named on the policy) in your flat.
Try CIS Manchester they used to do a basic policy for about £40 a year depending on post code
You could cancel when you graduate( will be charged short period rates) have you tried your students union0 -
no, I think we have to have our own separate insurance; Im not insuring the household!
tenants liability?? whats this about?
My students union is a waste of time really, they will suggest Endsleigh I shoudl imagine too as the office is right outside.

hi,
I've just had a look on Karma and in the exceptions it states in the laptop part that its only covered if less than two years old at the time of claiming! That excludes me.

Tenants liability is to cover your liability to things such say you break any sanitary ware or windows in the house the landlord will not pay for them !!
Say you you damage some part of your neighbors property because of your negligence and your neighbor made a claim against you this is were tenants liability comes in
Sometimes you are able to cover goods temporary removed from your home on your parents contents insurance ( at no cost)but it will not include tenants liability0 -
ahh I see
well HSBC say they wont cover my anything designed to be "portable" so that puts my laptop out - honestly these people cant be real, all these restrictions. Its looks like endsleigh are going to be the best bet.

It is usual to cover things like a laptop for theft while in the home !! once removed from the home you would need to take out an insurance to cover this type of risk.
Also on tenants liability as a example if you left your bath water running and forgot it then overflowed the bath and flooded the bathroom and then damaged the ceiling below this is your liability0
