Buying a home phone

[FONT=Palatino Linotype)xxx[/FONT]xxxxxx :confused: Hello,
This is my first visit to the forums, so please forgive me if I make mistakes (highly likely!)
I need to buy a new landline telephone and can't decide where to shop or what to buy. Ideally I would like twin/triple handsets, answer machine and BT compatible, but there are so many and with such price variations that researching it all just causes confusion and headaches.
Any help, suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you,

    Enter DECT in the search field on ebay and you'll be spoilt for choice.
    Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    I recently bought a BT Freelance xa3000 triple with answerphone from a powerseller with 100% feedback on Ebay for well under £50 including postage. I'd looked in Argos & they had the double set of this model in their sale reduced to half price at £70, so I got a real bargain by buying from Ebay.

    It's best to make a list of the features you want before deciding on a model. I particularly wanted a BT phone with handsfree facility, which is why I went for this particular model. The seller I bought from had a few other BT phones listed at lower prices & as he stated the features of each phone in his listings, it was easy to make my decision.
    The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

    I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

    I would get a Dect/ Gap compatible cordless phone to start with, with or without answering machine. The Dect phones are so much clearer than the avoid at all cost analogue phones. This means you can add extra phones around the house without extension wiring. The Gap bit means that you can mix and match makes, for as you say there are so many sizes shapes etc out there. It tends to be a learning process as some phones will have facilites like SMS, and others that you may need or not. Visit places like Comet , Currys etc to see and handle, choose what you like/need, then go for cheapest price on that model. Argos have quite a few on offer. There was a thread on here where you could get cheap refurbished Panasonic dect phones, like new, maybe still around.
