Any electricians/plumbers out there?

My dh is very handy at home (no pun intended!) and is very keen to look at retraining to become either a fully qualified plumber or electrician with a view to starting his own business, initially to run alongside his current job but possibly eventually to replace it.
So where do we start? it would need to be a course/courses that can be done flexibly/part time, either in the day or evening (as he works shifts but only 3 full days per week) and we appreciate the committment to learn a trade of this nature
Can anyone give us some pointers?

If you don't live in Scotland you could try one of these franchise mobs (Eleclocal / Plumblocal)
In Scotland SECTT operate the adult and 16-23 year old electrical training scheme, you would have to do their scheme as they have the only Scottish industry recognised training.
If you do any other scheme you may find you have to go self employed only, as some companies may not recognise your training.baldly going on...0 -
Hi there
There are a number of training agencies out there who will 'train' you to be a sparks in about 5 mins - but that doesn't mean you can do the work! Be careful. The best route would be to go to college and do city and guilds 2330, followed by 2392 and 2382, and work with an experienced electrician to get on the job knowledge. Many of the college courses can be done part time. In England and Wales, you'll then have to pay annually to join one of the Part P registered bodies (eg NICEIC, NAPIT and others) to be able to do any reasonably sized electrical jobs. All this costs money, and takes time.
I'm an electrician BTW but maybe plumbing would be more straightforward (but obviously not such a good career choice!)? Perhaps you should get a view from a plumber too?

Hi All
I recently enquired on doing C&G 2330 at local colleges (am in Scotland). I am a sole trader doing kitchens, bathrooms, tiling, decorating, etc. The electrical work I usually do but sub out to the formal testing to a competent guy (my brother:D ), but wanted to start getting some formal recognition for my competence as I usually do the install & he does the test & inspection.
Most of the local places weren't happy to take me on their day release/part time options. Even the paid for vocational course providers were looking for guys who were completely 'green' & wanted to charge £5K  !!! for C&G 2330.

I may suggest you contact SELECT and SECTT
SECTT are on 0131 4455659
SELECT are on 0131 0131 4455577
They are both seperate entities, but are based in the same complex.
SECTT will help with the training options available to you and SELECT will be able to provide some training
SECTT can also point you in the direction of local colleges.baldly going on...0 -
Many thanks for your replies, yes oh doesn't want to do a '5 min' course, we appreciate that this kind of skill can only really be learned over time and with lots of practice so are prepared for the cost and time it will take to do it properly, I just want to make sure he gets the right qualifications from the right provider
thanks againAug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00 -
