does anyone know where i can get a basic bank account bearing in mind i have a really bad credit history

I would suggest choosing one with Internet Banking, if you like the idea of banking online (and if you are an MSE user I expect you would).
Some offer debit cards; most don't. This may also be a consideration for you.
The better ones offer post office access to pay money in and withdraw it - given that there are more post offices than any bank has branches, that is a useful point to consider.0
