PS3 - Connect to PC Monitor & HiFi Amp?

Options
Hi there,

Hoping somebody can help me with this! I'm looking at buying a games console in the new year, at the moment I'm leaning towards a PS3 but Xbox 360 is an option.

Ideally I'd like to connect the console to my PC monitor (Samsung SM2032BW) and the audio to my Hifi amp (NOT a home cinema amp). After looking online it seems that I would be able to connect to the monitor as it is HDCP and has a DVI input. The audio I'm not so sure about however.

Can anyone give me some pointers as to whether this is possible and what extra accessories would I need to make it work? Thanks.

As I understand it, the lead that comes with the PS3 will allow sound through its phonos even if you use a HDMI lead with DVI converter on the end.

  • So the lead breaks out the video and audio into separate outputs?

there are 3 options for sound output in sound settings:

    HDMI
    Digital Out (Optical)
Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI

yes - the red, white and yellow phono jacks.

i have had my ps3 to output sound to my amp while using HDMI for video (using the last option in sound settings)
  • Thanks for your help. I'm still a little confused though: doesn't the HDMI cable just have a simple plug on both ends, or does it still break the cable up into separate outputs? And just to confirm, my amp will only take standard phono plug inputs (not optical etc), is this ok?

Anyone know more about the monitor side of things?
  • I connect my PS3 to a computer monitor using a HDMI to DVI cable. But there are two options:

    1. HDMI to DVI cable or
    2. HDMI to DVI Adapter (if you already have a HDMI cable)

Maplin do both with the latter option being the cheapest if you already own a HDMI cable.

The HDMI is a single lead. Its the free cable that comes with the PS3 that breaks the signal into video (yellow) and right and left audio (red and white) that plugs into the amp

  • Thanks gents. So the cables that come with the PS3 and one of these HDMI to DVI cables (I don't have an HDMI cable already) should be enough to get me going (I already have phono cables to connect to the amp):

  • That'll do the trick and a hell of a lot cheaper than the one I use.

yes (Though any extra phonos for the ps3 are NOT needed)
