How can I convince the wife to wait or is waiting a silly idea? In 5 years time what is a £100k house likey to be worth?

Tell her to get back in the kitchen and cook the dinner and to leave you to worry about the complicated decisions surrounding your financial affairs.

If that doesn't work, try distracting her by buying her a new vacuum. It's good for her to have a focus in life.

Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."

An interesting suggestion. I'll try that on my missus but that'll have to wait until I've washed up, done the ironing, fed the cat and made the beds.

What a male shovinistic statement. And an invitation to a real partnership:mad:

If I relied on my previous partners and their opinions I'd be drowning in debt:mad:

I wouldn't have thought you'd be able to get a mortgage with 10K of debt anyway? (and have you seen what else is on your credit file, and your wifes?). It may be there isn't a decision to be made here as I can't imagine there's a lender who would give 100K to someone with 10K debt, especially in this economic climate.

    This is what I'd do
    1. Pay off the debt (down to the last penny) and put the rest into a high interest savings account, this is your seed money for a deposit on your new house.
    2. Do the SoA stuff people have recommended and set yourself savings goals. Write them down, stick them on the fridge, whatever but make it clear and simple.
    3. Explain to your wife the incomings, outgoings and the targets you have set. You can do all the leg work but you are in this together, she needs to contribute to the deposit too.

I'd also make the point to her that you have a little one to think about. Does she want the child to grow up in a debt free household or a debt ridden one. As parents you need to show by example that excessive debt is completely unacceptable (and completely unnecessary).

There are a lot of people out there who would do ANYTHING for a chance to get out of debt and get a clean slate, you should take it.

    About housing association wage levels!

A long time ago maybe (1998) I left the army and was entitled to a flat, fair enough so far. 2 bed flat so I legally let 1 room out to my brother who got me a well paid job, £40k-£50k a year. So £80k-£100k a year coming into subsidised living all perfectly legally. Stinks eh?

Don't worry we've both moved on to our own propertys and mortgages, bringing up 2 children and have paid in all my life (money in taxes, time as in 3 years served with H.M Forces) but whilst living in my flat was never asked for my earnings and believe I would have been welcome to stay forever. Rent was £190/month between us. SHOULD'VE STAYED PUT!!!

Glenn get yourself straight, save up and buy your own place. It will give you a wonderful sense of achievement and will drag your wife out of the doldrums, then you can sit back and watch while your sister-in-law and her ilk go bump.:D
