When are dividends paid?

Sorry for the newb question but is it possible to find out when a dividend has been paid or is about to be paid for any company?

I think what you really want to know is when the stock goes ex-dividend.. I.e. the dividend is paid some time after the ex-dividend date. usually a 6 weeks or so.
