Hi,
Out of interest, what does it cost roughly to keep a horse each week? I would just like an idea so I know what I am aiming at, if you don't mind?
I'm going to look tomorrow for horse magazines at the newsagents, today has really resparked my interest!!
Heather
Hi Heather
I've just done my year end figures (saddo I know:rotfl: :rotfl: ) and the cost of keeping 2 horses at grass livery for the year is £3950:eek:  That includes everything.....livery,farrier, feed, 1 vet bill, PL insurance but only one is shod and I've only bought 1 rug (£72) this year....so no expensive tack and i have to admit that I'm stunned as until now I've just paid out without realising just how much it adds up to. At the moment, I can't see a realistically cheaper way of keeping them in this area.
This is a serious concern for me as it's very likely I won't have a job by April so I'm just going to have to get my thinking cap on..........
ETA £76 pw for them both0 -
hum costs of keeping. ok i dont pay for grazing as we have our own 2 acres and i share accomm with my friend who also has two acres but.. the rest of it is really quite cheap. I am one of the new old schools (if that makes sense) barefoot and learned to use a rasp to keep the feet level. rug less he ( gasps is amazement) grows a winter coat. he has access to a field shelter but uses it as a fly shelter ie not used in winter but used in summer. I feed no short feed whatsoever just leftover veg trimmmings i buy a big square bale of hay for £20 and that does the two horses at worst a fortnight but at best i.e. now about 3 + weeks. i dont spend anything on gadgets he is in a simple snaffle and a saddle he had for years. i just look after my stuff.
howver he takes up hours of my time because i take him out on a headcollar ride down lanes and let him graze at all the county natural weeds. things like cow parsley he always chooses never/ very rarely clover or lush grass he particularly enjoys very short grass which is regularly mowed ( but i do limit the access to that) i dont poo pick but i use him to harrow the ground and i dont worm regularly just use a worm count lab. so really he is not expensive. Oh and he is insured just third party and vets not fanciful competition insurance.0 -
I spend 500 pounds a month on my two. One of which is retired and lives out 24/7.
Here's a rough breakdown -
£85 per month for grass livery (includes winter hay)
£150 per month for DIY livery (includes stable, ad lib hay & straw)
£100 every 6 weeks to farrier (one is fully shoed, the other has front shoes & the back hooves just trimmed)
£30 per month on hard feed including supplements
£600 yearly on insurance
£60 per year per horse on vaccinations
£30 per year per horse on horsey dentist
£10 per horse every 3 months for wormers
I spent £103 on 3 rugs in the Boxing Day sale at local tack shop
Then I spend money on lessons, competition entry fees, diesel to get to competitions etc etc. OH think horses eat better than we do
