Hi, I'm after a laptop, general surfing, MP3, photo's and the odd game (not to demanding), thing is I have a Comet credit note for £150. They seem to do alot of Acers, anyone have anything to say about Acers...good/bad.

If anyone could give me a few pointers from that link above, that would be great. I could only really look at the ones up to the £499 budget but I could maybe stretch to £599 at a BIG push. I have kind of ruled out the Toshiba as it's only 256mb ram.
Thanks in advance............

Don't rule out 256 Mb RAM machines - if they take SoDIMM memory and have a free slot then the upgrade is cheap (from ebuyer) and easyTANSTAAFL !0

Cheers Jim,
After a quick forum search of Acer, the general cosencous of opinion is there Cr*p !!, so Mr Toshiba may be in for a sale !
Anyone know if that machine can be upgraded to 512 ram0 -
buy from comet? are you mad?0
-
Yes it can be upgraded but, although Celeron-M processors are decent enough, I wouldn't spend more than £399 on a 1.3ghz Celeron-M and I would pick an Acer 1.7ghz Pentium-M everyday if it's £499. OK Acers don't have the same reputation but I've been entirely happy with my Pentium-M Acer which I've had for about 14 months. If you don't go for the Acer I certainly wouldn't recommend the Toshiba for £499 - your paying £100 for the Toshiba name.0

Acer are good enough, but if you have one that needs repairing beware, it could take many weeks to repair, & repeat problems are not un heard of, i know..

No choice mate £150 credit note kind of dictates it.
Anyone have anymore thoughts on the Acer Pentium M ??0 -

Pentium M is just the processor, all laptops wich claim to be centrino will have a pentium M processor inside which model of Acer were you thinking of?0 -
Go for the Acer Travelmate Pentium M at £499. I have the same one as grahawk and it has been fine, using it now. I added another 256 RAM for under £20 very easily (hardest bit was finding the right screwdriver!) Can't comment on support as I haven't needed it.
I get much better battery life with mine...only 2 hours??This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!
