Stolen Credit Cards

Hi everyone,
My son had his UK credit and debit cards stolen on xmas eve (in Australia) and both the NatWest and the Halifax say they cant replace the cards for 10days or more, AND they must be sent to his UK address. Both banks knew he was going abroad and will be out there for some months yet. He's backpacking but could have the cards sent to colleague's home address in Sydney. He obtained a crime reference number from the Sydney police but he says without the cards he cant use any ATM's, etc.
Surely there are procedures in place to allow a stranded customer access to his own account while abroad?? Otherwise, I can see myself being heavily lumbered! .. :-(.

Apart from the 10 days to get a new card - which is incredibly slow what else do you think the lenders can/should do?
Why were all your son's cards in the one place?
When the cards arrive at the UK address DHL them overnight to Australia - problem sorted.0 -
his address with them is confirmed as the UK. they cannot send it willy nilly to anywhere in the world just coz he isnt in the UK.
and when it doesnt arrive or is robbed again in sydney, you'd only complain!0
