Current Account with a Debit Card

Options
Hello!

I am currently unemployed (hopefully not for much longer) and I want a current account with a debit card.

I am currently with Abbey - been with them since I was a child - and have a saving account with a cash card. I would like the ability to set up a direct debit payment and also to have a debit card. It is so annoying at my age (23) to keep giving my Mother cash so I can use her card to buy something on the internet.

I asked Abbey and they would only offer me a current account with a cash card - so there seemed to be no point in changing. I also asked at the Halifax and they would not even give me a Visa Electron :(

It just seems a bit strange that I cannot get a debit card from them when a few years ago, when I started University, they kept offering me bank accounts and asking me to apply for a credit card. I turned down all their offers because I did not need the hassle of changing at that point and thought it would be easy later. Now I want to change and they won't let me!

I am confused! Are there any accounts out there that will give me a basic account with a debit card? I have never had any debts/overdrafts etc and I don't think I am asking for anything complicated!

Any advice?

Thanks,

Chris

My 13 y.o. son has Visa Electron with Halifax and Solo with HSBC. The other bank to go for a Solo card is (only?) Natwest.
  • This is what I don't understand - they can give a Visa Electron to children but why not to me?

I can understand that they might not want to give me a normal Visa debit card at this time, but surely a Visa Electron would be fine?

Surely I can only spend money I have in my account with a Visa Electron? So why can't everyone have one?

    Confused Chris :wall:
