Forgotten password on laptop

I will explain this the best I can:
My friend got her daughter a laptop for christmas, its a Toshiba Satellite, somehow a password has been set on it and they don't know what password they have put on it.
Its not the password you would use for different users, this ask for the password after the start up screen and does not load the operating system.
I have tried to start it in safe mode and use the recovery disks but none of these work as you cannot press F12 etc.
I have a toshiba laptop and have looked at my user guide, I think they have gone through HW setup but the userguide doesn't tell you what to do if you have forgotton password.
I am stuck to what they can do, can anyone help please

It sound like a BIOS Password. I'd suggext calling Toshiba as its a new laptop. If you google the exact model you may find a solution. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
thanks for your reply, did a search on google which came up with a couple of passwords to try, it hasn't worked so they will have to contact toshiba.0
