Hi, I have just bought myself an Olympus digital slr, it looks like it can have either a cf or xd memory card? Any ideas which is best to use please? I have seen a 2gb xd card and a 4gb cf card?
Thanks

It's not an easy choice. In terms of compatibility, the CF would be a better bet - the XD format is specific to Fuji and Olympus and so won't readily be re-usable in any other make of device.
However, the CF format is bulky and quite old, so there's a fair chance the format will be obsolete before the XD card - though I doubt that will be an issue anytime soon.
Given that it's a more recent design, the XD probably also supports higher speed data transfer than a standard CF card too.
If it's a secondhand camera, it would be worth checking on Olympus' website for XD card compatibility, as there are two different types. If it's a new camera it should work with either type.0 -
Would not think it makes much difference, I would go for the CF cards, slightly more universal and you can get bigger ones. San Disk ones are good. Does the camera have to ability to put the picture on both cards? If it does this is good if you get a corupt card.
Don't worry about CF's going out of use its what Nikon are still using in there top of the range cameras.0 -
I agree with both the above posters, I have been into digital photography for many years and have a wide range of cameras and cards that I use depending what I want to photograph. I have {and still use} both CF and XD cards but prefer CF overall, the size {and now speed} of the CF make {for me} the best of all worlds, it is fast {for action shots} and the storage per card means that I only need to take a few 4 or 8GB cards for a 2 or 3 week break away . The XD only go to 2GB at this time and although there will be larger coming {when is unknown for sure} I would start with CF and change {if you want at a later date. I would also advise getting a memory card reader rather than using the direct link from your camera as there will be less chance of problems transfering ANY photos you take0
