Yellow line on public holiday?

Firstly, sorry if this is the wrong board. ma called me on xmas day (thursday 25th December 2008) and asked the following:

I want to park on a single yellow line. There is a plate saying no parking 8:30am - 6:30pm Monday to friday. Ma asked "as its a bank holiday (xmas day) are these rules on this day? At first I said no, but i remember some single yellow lines are suspennded on public holidays, anyway enough said. I looked in the highway code, and was even more confused, who writes this guidance???? anyway, can anyone help????
Trinidad - I have a number of needs. Don't shoot me down if i get something wrong!!

It would make life a lot easier for those able to help you if you start your own post, it can get very confusing trying to select the appropriate post an answer refers to.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

The fact is the rules apply 365 days a year unless signposted otherwise. HOWEVER on Xmas day, you're not going to find anyone working who is likely to ticket you.

Well no? They don't apply at all without signage, whether it be roadside plates or CPZ entry to zone signs.

I get what you meant though. They apply on Bank Holidays unless signed to the contrary.
that leaves open the possibility of flawed signage though. I happen to know that all of my local ones do not apply on BHs but 60+% are not signed to say so. Not very good because the CEO will go by signage - then a protracted argument and exchange of correspondence to sort it. Pain.

On Christmas day ? I had a funny idea there was a blanket exemption for that no matter what - maybe I'll check when i find time.

I know our traffic wardens work Christmas Day as a lady at the top of my road was a warden and worked last year!! She doesn't celebrate Christmas and got offered a huge bonus to work.
    Lightbulb moment Dec 2005 - debt £23700

    June 2010 - £17984.21
  • so I am assuming as the sign said monday to friday this includes bank holiday periods then. If a single yellow line is excluded from bank holidays, does a plate need to say that?

Yes correct. It will say BH not included. That is, with the possible exception of Christmas day about which I remain curious.

Did she actually get a PCN and if so, from which Council?

  • Just as Neil B says. Here is a link to an adjudication case on a similar matter that may give guidance.
