Im running vista 32bit SP1 on a sony VGN-N38E laptop with 2gb ram and in the last month ive noticed my laptop seems to be taking much longer to startup fully. Any ideas how I can identify the problem?

I'd follow these steps:
1. Run Windows Update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
2. Run CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com
3. Run an anti-virus scan: http://www.free-av.com/
4. Run an anti-spyware scan: http://www.superantispyware.com/
5, Run an anti-malware scan: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
6. Check the VRAM settings i.e.:
- Click Start, then open the Control Panel.
- Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Under Performance, click Settings.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Under Virtual memory, click Change.
- Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file (virtual memory) settings that you want to change. In almost every case, this will be your C: drive.
- Click to select the "System managed size" option, then click Set.
- Click OK three times and restart your computer.
7. Go to Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs and uninstall anything not needed.
8. Run a defrag: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848
9. Investigate msconfig: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/0 -
take a look at task manager , see if one process is hogging all the processor power, there is a vista process that does this , but the name eludes me !!
can be turned off , think it's some sort of indexer
run me off a hijackthis log file so I can see whats going on
rather than go thorugh a whole load of uneeded virus scans etcEx forum ambassador

HIJACK will tell us in seconds if theres something nasty running or not:idea:0 -

I completely agree. All we're saying is do the hijack log FIRST so we can see if there is anything running that shouldnt be.:idea:0 -
hijackthis 5 seconds
full scan etc , one hour
no point in a full scan of the machine to diagnose if it's infected , see whats wrong , then run the appropriate softwareEx forum ambassador

using a hammer to open a walnut actually
if its a new smitfraud/vundo infection then none of the options you listed would remove it , one of the specialised remover tools would be needed
I'm trying not to waste their time on hours of needless updates and scans (vista SP1 is the latest build , again hijackthis will confirm it) when it may just be a case of disabling the service I mentioned in my first post (can use up 99% of processor for seemingly no reason , grinding vista to a virtual halt)
found it
SearchIndexer.exe
go to
Start -- Run -- services.msc
find the Windows Search entry, change it from 'Automatic' to 'Manual' and reboot
but this is only required if their is evidence of high CPU usag from task manager
Open Task Manager by right-clicking the taskbar and then clicking Task Manager.
then click on the processes tab and look down the list to see what , if anything , is grabbing the processor usage , if it's the thing I posted above it will be showing at somewhere between 45-99 %Ex forum ambassador
