car problem help

i have problems with my v reg astra manaul

firstly sometimes when i brake the rev counter increases to 2-2.5k rpm. 2 days ago it happened about 6 times while driving for 30 min but yesterday only happened twice. i know im not pressing the gas peddle

second problem is that sometimes when im in first, second or third gear the car jumps, this happens when i let go of the gas peddle. not sure whats causing this, its not low speed in high gear

thirdly my open release bonnet catch is very loose and takes about 10 attemps to open the bonnet. just wanted to know if this is a easy job for the garage to fix and would it be an expensive job.

thank you and any help appreciated.

  • Problem 1 is the floor mat catching the peddle probably...
  • If the brakes are a problem, call out the AA or the RAC, thats why we pay them. The usual (is it safe to drive question?)

Then the rest, fire it into a local back street car garage, avoid main dealers like the plague unless you want £75-80 per hour labour.

Sounds like you need a bit of a service. Not sure if I agree with "that is why we pay them". They are there surely for emergency situations when you are stranded at the side of the road?

As for bonnet release, have you checked the tension on the cable, havea look at thsi and see if you can adjust it easily. If not it should really be an expensive repair 5-10 mins although they might suggest a new cable., which you can decide whether its worth paying the money.

If I was in you shoes I would be asking friends/family to suggest a good small independant garage that you can trust.

check the floor mat isnt fouling the pedals in anyway. its quite common if the mats arent secured to the floor.
and get the bonnet release cable sorted before it snaps altogether causing trouble and costing you more money to fix.
    ...work permit granted!
  • ok, i removed the mat and decided to drive 2day, but still had the problem of car revving while braking, any ideas whats causing this before i go to the garage on tuesday?.

also any more ideas on problem 2 and 3?
  • Maybe it's the size of your shoe? Catching both peddals?

Sound as though its something to do with the vacumn pressure in the brake servo changing when the bradke pedal is depressed

sounds like a vacumn pipe that is spilt or disconnected, need to look under the bonnet beware of rotating objects and hot sufaces..

a quick test is to spray some carb cleaner around the pipes/throttle body, if the revs increase u have a leak

Either that or the servo. When he presses the brakes, it'll lean out the mixture. One thing this can do is actually increase engine speed in a petrol engine as daft as it sounds.
