Zavvi Gift Card Problems

Bought my dad a Zavvi Gift Card for Christmas and have since found out that the company has gone into administration. Having followed their advice in the store i have looked on their webiste with regards to the Gift Cards and it sais the following:

It is expected that all customers who purchased zavvi gift vouchers from zavvi stores from 27 November 2008 will receive a full refund in respect of the unredeemed value of the gift vouchers. Unfortunately, it is not possible for vouchers to be redeemed in stores.

All customers who have unredeemed vouchers acquired since 27 November 2008 should write to the Joint Administrators at the following address, quoting their voucher number(s), enclosing the original voucher(s) and quoting their full name and address for return correspondence:

zavvi Vouchers
c/o The Joint Administrators of zavvi Group
Ernst & Young LLP
100 Barbirolli Square
Manchester
M2 3EY

We recommend that customers keep a copy of vouchers for their records.

Regrettably, it will not be possible to refund vouchers acquired prior to 27 November 2008. Customers with unredeemed vouchers acquired prior to 27 November 2008 should write to the Joint Administrators at the above address, asking for their claim to be registered as an unsecured claim.

I purchased the Gift Card on the 24th November and i am a little bit confused as to where i stand with the above. Can anybody shed any light on this for me?

Is there a date on the voucher itself? As your dad "acquired" it on 25th December maybe he can send it off and claim a refund - as the recipient of the gift he would not have the receipt?

They use gift cards rather than vouchers. So it would be quite easy for them to check as the date the money was added to the card will be stored on their computer.
  • I agree I was given a gift card and thought I would leave it to the January sales. Been in today and was told that they couldnt accept it. I told them it was bought with cash already paid to them and therefore it was theft if i couldnt redeem it unfortunately they wouldnt budge. I have got home and checked the balance online which still says £50. Going to have to try and get it off the administrators but this shouldnt be the case.

    Hi there,

The cut off date for "secure" refunds is the 27th as stated (I.E. you will definately get a refund)

You just need to write to the administrators (Ernst and Young) state your position and your claim will be debt with in a "best endaviour" approach. They are perfectly within their right to do this unfortunately.

Just a thought but IF these gift cards were bought with credit cards won't the CC company compensate?

Or a Visa Debit card. Not Switch or Maestro though.

  • I received 40 pounds worth of zavvi gift cards which were purchased before the 24th November. I went in store to try and spend them and was told I couldn't but could send off and claim it back. Surely as a consumer you have the right to a full refund with the receipt even if it was before the 24th of november as another member has said the I would have only 'aquired' it on the 25th Decemeber for christmas. I will write to the administrators but if they still say I cannot receive the money I will have to get some advice from Martin Lewis as to where to go from there and my rights!

They are not required to unless the cards are in excess of £100 in which case the Section 75 of the consumer credit act can be used to obtain a refund

You are likely to have a long wait! ;)

You are not acting as a consumer, you are an unsecured creditor. Unless the information relating to debit or credit cards is relevant, you just have to wait in the queue with everyone else.
