Connecting PC via wireless

I have a 4 years old pc that I moved upstairs in my house. Previously connected via cable to the modem. Now have new pc and also using a BT Hub (the last version not the latest one). I have not been able to establish a connection wirelessly to the hub but the old pc supposedly has a wireless capability (and a little ariel on the back).
My laptop with its inbuilt wireless works anywhere in the house.
Any ideas on how to check that the wireless function on the old pc actually works and how to connect if the problem is distance or walls or some other physical obstruction or perhaps signal is not strong enough from old pc. Can or should I buy another router, plugging in the old pc via a cable to connect it to the bt hub wirelessly?
Thanks for any help offered.

you'll need to connect to the hub via the cable, then browse to its config page by using its IP address in the internet explorer address bar. Once you're in check that wireless is enabled, then reset the security keys etc (if you don't know what they are)0

On your old pc click on control panel, then system, then device manager, and look at network adapters. If you have wireless it should be listed there, and you should be able to check whether it is working. It may be worthwhile installing the latest drivers for it.
If wireless doesn't work, and you cannot run a network cable to it, then look at the homeplug system which networks through the electrical system in your house.0 -
Thanks guys. I'll get on to these suggestions. Regarding the homeplug idea, I use one of the 2 ethernet sockets on the Hub to run BT Vision which operates through a Homeplug type system - not entirely sure if I can add to this or if I was no longer using the vision box, use it for some other piece of kit (such as the old pc). Would be nice if it works however.0

Is the BT Hub actually wifi enabled? Also my mate got a BT Hub with wifi and couldn't connect to that. He changed the channel it worked on and it's fine now.0

I have just bought and installed two HomePlug Turbos, see here, they arrived next day. (Actually bought them off eBay). I spent 10 mins looking at the manual and 5 mins plugging them in and had instant connection. I have spent the last year and a half trying to resolve poor wireless connections around the house.0

On the original post it says they can use a wireless laptop anywhere in the house, so the hub must be wireless enabled already.
