You may wonder why a posting to Canada would prompt a thread on this site. We received the booklet BATUS Pre-arrivals Guide. Which is a great booklet as it does give you lots in information.
There is a section called 'What to Bring'. Before I say anything else let me tell you what we brought. Plasma TV, video player, DVD player, surround sounds theatre system, Hi-fi, computer, printer, photo printer, scanner, computer sound system.
The guide suggests that some electrical equipment may not work and that you may need to buy a transformer. Well we bought the transformer, a 500W transformer to power all of the electrical equipment including the 42" Plasma TV,
I tested everything using the transformer to make sure it still worked. Then I tested everything, through an extension lead, direct to the power socket and everything but the surround system worked.
The guide also stated that the TV was not being able to receive Canadian broadcasts. This is true. But if you receive cable TV through a digital receiver, as supplied by the cable company, make sure it has the 3 AV sockets (red/white for sound and yellow for video) you can plug it into a SCART adaptor (bring one with you) and your TV will show Canadian broadcasts.
You may still need to buy a DVD player because of the region code unless you have a multi-region player.
Maybe we were very lucky that the majority of our items worked but to replace all of these items would have been a lengthy and expensive process. So try before you buy!

A simple way to check if it works would be to look at the back of the electrical item, and look for the working voltage. It will either says 240v or the usual 110v - 240v
Which means that it will either work at 110v or 240v.
In short, if they make them all this way, the only difference is the end plug, and if this electrical item has a kettle lead, or a 2pin lead like on a stereo, they can make 1 item to fit the world, but just change the power leads.
The plasma probably has a computer monitor type of lead into the back, you could just replace this, and keep the old lead for on return to the uk.0 -
The majoirty of items, including the plasma only state 240v. The reason I bought the 500 watt transformer is because the TV uses 270 watts. A 100 watt transformer is a lot cheaper but it would not have been capable of powering the TV, although admittedly it would have been sufficient to power everything else.
I have changed no leads on anything. All I have done is changed the plug on the extension leads to a canadian plug.0
