It's absolutely pointless trying to make it 'special' - unless you want to show off to others over how much effort you put in for your child compared to their efforts for their children.
Wouldn't it be better to simply spend a day with the child, playing, talking and generally doing all the things that parents do with their children? Certainly, that would seem to be more special to a 1 year old than a big party, none of which is going to be remebered anyway?
Maybe your right maybe he wont remember his 1st birthday party in years to come but I will have plenty of pictures for my son to look back on in years to come. I think it is special celebrating my sons life, isnt that what most people do celebrate special occasions?
My son loves interacting with other children and he loved xmas day so I do belive he will enjoy a party and any effort we put in will not be for myself and I certianly do not show off to others.
Infact reading your comments I do not think that they are very nice to be honest.
I spend quality time playing and reading to my son every day0 -
Mrs T - I am sure that you and your family will enjoy your son's 1st birthday. Yes your son will probably not remember any of the christmas's and birthday for the 1st couple of years but as you say its great seeing them and getting photos/videos of their expressions. Hope you are able to find a suitable way to celebrate your's son's 1st birthday. We certainly enjoyed our daughters' christmas this year even though she is 21mths and will not remember but we have captured this on video to play back later. If he likes playing with other kids you could have a wee tea party but it will be messy.MFIT T2 Challenge - No 46

Thank you all for your helpful comments well most of them lol
I was thinking of a small party at my parents house as they have lots more room than at my house. I have quite a large family and I was going to invite a few close friends too.
I was going to do a small buffett for the kids and adults and was looking to get some ideas from the annabel karmel complete party planner book that I hope to pick up cheap from ebay
It is important to me and my husband to have a party for Jack as he is very special to us and we want to celebrate it.
I think I will start with making a list of guests as suggested as then maybe I can work out how much food and drink I will need from there.
I was going to make little party bags too but the kids are of all different ages so will have to have a think of what to put in those.
Thanks for the tip about ebay for the decorations etc I hadnt actually thought of ebay for that stuff so will go and look at prices etc.0 -

I've also just had another thought, could you get a nice little book and ask all the guests to write a little message in it for your little one to read once he is old enough. (sort of like a wedding guest book!):love:11th March 2010- Got engaged to my amazing fiance, planning our wedding for 20120 -

ooooh what a lovely idea, maybe add some photo's to it too so it'll be like a little scrap book. Especially if you could get a picture of the guest with your son0 -
This may be stating the obvious but have a nice cake, either in the shape of a figure one or just with one candle on it. I have lovely photos of my DD with all her childhood birthdays with corresponding number cakes.0

balloons usually go down well you can get ones with 1 today on.i really love the silver helium ones-!
the number cake is really nice too.
for party bags chocolate is suitable for all ages also crayons and notepads!
with the food you could always suggest each guest brings one item eg:crisps!
anyway- hope you all have a great party!:T:starmod::starmod::starmod::starmod::starmod::starmod::starmod::starmod::starmod::starmod:0
