  • The new battery has not made the engine turn over faster on startup.
I tried your advice goldspanners and after 3-4 turns of the key until glow plug light goes out it fired up with no problems! Hooray!
So next day I changed glow plugs for brand new and guess what? It still didnt start 1st time! The only way it starts is to do your trick with glow plug light 3-4 times.
Today I have changed fuel filter and iam thinking of adding something to the diesel to clean the injectors as when it it running it lacks power.
Thanks for all the help so far everyone and ill keep you posted.

slowly but surely. usually when you have to heat the glow plugs a few times it is the plugs that are done, but if it works by heating them a few times it may be the timer that isnt heating them for long enough.
dont worry it will be summer by the time we sort this out and there will be a lesser need for them! :rotfl:

  • Hy i have a 04 reg vauxhall combo van 1.7di last week i had a new gearbox put in eversince then my van takes ages to start but once started it will start everytime until cold again ive changed all glow plugs new air and fuel filters also new alternator belt and checked and cleaned all earths iv had the alternator and battery tested there ok there is no leaks or anything but i really dont have a clue now and im sick of spending pointless money please help regards ste message me please.
  • I realise that the op has probably solved their prob by now but I am posting this to help other baffled visitors, that like me, are brought here by google search.
The problem here is likely a dodgy ignition switch, which wrecks the starter and alternator. I've learned this the hard way, replace starter and ignition switch as a pair on these vans.
