I know Petplan are expensive but they are the best in paying out on claims and are always recommended by vets.

not cheap - but that is because they are the best - Petplan.

Axa are (hopefully) pretty solid too.

I will check out petplan but like the kennel club's own insurance to say they are not cheap is an understatement. AXA underwrite a lot of the big ones like M&S and bizarely the quote from M&S (underwritten by AXA) is cheaper than from axa direct.

Thanks to everyone for their input, much appreciated. I often wonder if I would be better putting £50 a month in an account for him and would have £600 per year to pay for things although with my other dog she was £1,000's in her first 2 years as she had to see specialists and stuff.

Trouble is you can bet your life if you have the insurance it'll never need it but if you save monthly it'll break a leg etc in month 2! Also, if an emergency came up, could you be 100% sure you wouldn't use it if there was no other funds available? Or apparently Cruciate ligament issues are common in dogs & cost a fair bit, and from what some here say the other leg goes not long after!

M&S will add a % to the fixed excess once the pet gets older, I don't think Axa do. I think PP do tho but seeing as Chaya is estimated to be six I have a few years until it'd come into force & can always change to Axa later on!

Ahh also, forgot to say, if you do put money into an account it's worth taking out third party liability insurance only seperately, normally it'd be in the pet insurance & if the dog causes a car accident or anything (Like mine's terrified of fireworks & if she slipped her lead she'd run into the road) or bit anyone or anything it could run up bigtime!
  • I used to insure my two boys (mini long-haired dachshunds) with PetPlan, but then the premiums and excess just got silly, so we went with the "save the equivalent of the premium every month" plan, except that there was always something connected with them that needed to be paid for out of the vet fund, so we just couldn't build up a nest egg for any big bills.

So, in October 2008, I went back to insuring the boys, who are both now 12 years old. The premiums make me wince slightly (just over £70/month, but that covers both of them), but the cover suits my needs - or should I say, it suits my fears!

We currently have a claim in with the company, which is Axa. I've rung them a couple of times, and they've always been extremely helpful.
  • dont touch e and l they are rubbish, we went with hsbc was quite reasonable for our large breed pup

Hiya, for Petplans top policy they pay out £12,000 for life cover but for my own dog (Stafford x) it's £30 a month roughly, .

£38.32 per month - ouch! for a rottie.

do AXA underwrite M&S again? i thought someone else took over the M&S policies?
  • M&S was the best pilicy for us. They have really high claim limits which most other insurers don't have, that level of cover doesn't come cheap.

Royal & Sun Alliance underwrite M&S it seems. A good policy except when the pet gets to old age, then there's a % + fixed excess!
