    Thanks all
A Volvo doesnt quite click it for me.
A Merc or BMW is attractive but running costs are a worry.
Might have a look at a Mondeo.
Is a Rav 4 any good?

Harveybobbles is right about the Omega, a good one will take some finding.

Rav 4 is a good quality reliable vehicle, like most Toyota's, could well suit you, other toyota's to consider could be a sensibly tyred avensis or the most underrated of their cars the camry, these are a real bargain and lexus quality.
If you really want a vehicle that laughs at pot holes, and anything else, try a landcruiser (preferably amazon), unbelievable reliability and in the current climate a bargain if you don't mind being hated by the greenies.

The newer mondeo's i have driven have had quite a hard ride in my humble.
maybe its the influence of these young hip motoring journalists who think we all drive like we're on a track and need roll-less cornering and sharp turn in and other such things on our cars, which results in the rock hard ride of many modern cars.
In the real world most of us are negotiating the cratered after effects of a war zone which many of our roads currently resemble.

MB's and BM's can be quite as economical as any other largish car to run, but unless you a competent mechanic you need access to a good personally recommended indy for either of those.
The big thing in their favour is the 2 superb parts suppliers GSF and Eurocarparts (and one or 2 other smaller outfits), very high quality often OE parts at good value prices.
MB's have to be examined very carefully for rust years 96 to 04/05, BM's are much better in this respect.
One of my cars is a 124 coupe, old school MB and with good maintenance still a very competent comfortable car.

I hope you find what you want.

    Agreed!

One the reasons I've still got mine!

You won't find many like it, either!!

97R plate (but got my reg VAN580Y obviously), 2.5CDX auto estate, so every toy you can think of, & coming from the best home, possible - despite some peoples views, direct out of service from the Police.

It's not a white one though, it's in silver grey metalic, no blues n 2's, or livery - was used as Special Escort Group vehicle, so always driven by professional drivers & looked after properly, while providing protection to our politicians & other 'important' folk!! Still original paintwork, virtually no marks, despite 150000miles.Was 117000 when I got it.

Did have head gasket problem, which was expensive & now sorted. Even smoother now it's on Dunlop tyres.

So £1600 to buy it, nearly 5years ago, not bad value!!
