We got ours from a local farm. 16lber cost £50 so no more than Tesco and was the best turkey we've had in years. On top of that, we knew it was looked after properly and killed humanely.

Shame that yours was bad though. Shouldn't go off that quicker no matter where you get it from

  • Our local farm butcher was actually £2 a kilo cheaper than the supermarkets an quality os much higher as not plumped out with water for a start, would certainly recommend at least trying them out during the year.
Real men never follow instructions; after all they are just the manufacturer's opinion on how to put something together. :p

Thanks all - will probably try a farm shop after this experience.

The ironic thing is that it was turkey that stopped me being vegetarian! After being vegetarian for many years, we were at OH's grandmas for a pre-christmas meal. I was pregnant with no 1 at the time, intending to have the veg, spuds etc. Saw the turkey and just couldn't hold back! Decided it was my pregnant body needing something and that was it!
    Now proud Mumto3 :j

I have had a Tesco chicken go off in the fridge while still within date. I don't buy their poultry any more.

I got a turkey half crown from a local butcher this year, they have to be ordered and he gets them from a local farm on Christmas Eve morning. It was the best turkey I have ever tasted, I will definitely be going back there again next year.

I had a fresh turkey crown from Tesco and it was absolutely fine and tasted lovely. I had to get something small as it was just me and my boyfriend and I couldn't find anyone else doing turkey's (or the crown) as small.

A slaughtered turkey should be plucked whilst still warm and then you have the option of haning it (inards in tact0 for up to 10 days. This not only improves the flavour of the bird, but improves the texture, the muscles will relax and your meat will be more tender.
If you receive your bird still warm as one poster did, the meat will not have relaxed and you might end up with tougher turkey.

So, if you buy a wrapped and bagged turkey from a supermarket the use-by date should be no more than 14 days from slaughter (ish). Calculated as hanging with inards still inside for upto 10 and then sit in the fridge for 3 or 4 before it starts to go off, becasue once the inards have been removed the meat will begin to break down.

    Hope that helps
