Please help needed with wireless!!!

Any help with this would be great. I was up till 3am trying to sort it out with no luck.

We got the kids a new PC, and the wireless is doing my head in.

The PC came with a wireless card, which is working (can get on the internet with it just fine). The problem is just the signal strenght it very weak, making the internet VERY slow. I know its not the router, as our laptop has a very good signal (excellent infact). We have a dongle, so I tried that. The signal is better, but the problem is, I cant to connect with it. I have downloaded the the most recent drivers for it, from the makers site and made sure there for Vista.

But everytime I try to select the dongle connection I get a 'Wireless connection faied because the network denied the association request from this computer' message.

I cant find anything that helps me googling, can anyone help me please.

The PC is a ACER Aspire, the dongle is a Phillips SNU5600, and our router is a Netgear.

If you need anymore info just let me know.

Thank in advance for any help.

Have you tried repairing the connection? Right click on the wireless icon, Repair.

So have you disabled the wireless card and are now trying to connect with the USB dongle? What wireless encryption are you using? Does the router have MAC address filtering enabled?

  • Yes, I has disabled the card and trying to connect with the dongle. The router has MAC filtering, but its set to accept the PC's MAC code/address.

I couldnt tell you what encryption we are using. My partner normaly sorts thing like this out, and shes at work.

So switch off the MAC address filtering on the router (it's not worth having anyway) and see if you can then connect using the USB dongle.

note the "MAC" is linked to the network card not the machine so when you changed between the dongle and the card the MAC changed so the router did not let this new wireless connection to connect.

If you want to be secure best things to do is change the SSID from the default name and set it to be hidden and use a WPA password.

Agreed except that hiding the SSID does not make the network more secure and can cause problems e.g. neighbours using the same wireless channel that you are using and creating unnecessary interference.
