Switching to Poewergen & BG?? or London Energy dual fuel?

Hi

Finally gettring round to sorting out my parents gas and electric suppliers (it's amazing what an npower do-to-door salesman can push you to do!).

Anyway having used the comparison site Martin recommended in October, it came up with a saving of £120 by switching the gas to Powergen-Age Concern (though apparantly you only have to be 18 to be on that tarriff!) and the electricity via British Gas -online+1 month free elec tarriff.

Althoughthe combined gas and electricity through London Energy-Online would save £180. Have i missed something because i kept thinking that having separate suppliers was the way to go? Also being in the North West can i get London Energy? Sorry if these are daft questions.

Finally, it is ok to switch from one tarriff to another with the same supplier, as they get their gas from Powergen at the moment but not the Age Concern tarriff.

Basically, i'm in the dilemma of switching both to London Energy (assuming i do that from all the way up here!) or keeping them separate.

There's not much else i need to check is thee? Apart from cancelling the npower thing - which carries a 14day change your mind policy.

Thanks

  • Looked further into this and think that London energy-Online (dual fuel) works out cheapest.

My only concern is that it came out chapest via the comparison websites but when i went on the london energy site - i had to go to EDF Energy (regional area) and the savings through the were considerably less than through the comparison sites. (£85 compared to £190).

Just rang london energy and they said the prices should be the same - and said i should check via uswitch.

Just been through uswitch and edf/london energy isnt even on there - and the savings aren't near to what the other sites mentioned - very confused

We changed a few years ago to British Gas and we have had no end of hassle. We now wish we had never changed!

Sorry to put a downer on the topic!

I would use the comparison sites and get it via that with the cheapest

Tarifs change and I don't have any knowledge of staywarm, but PG online was best for economy 7 whilst LE online was best for standard rate. I suspect when you went through Uswitch you did or did not press the E7 option. Also, on the range of possible tarifs, did you select all or put on restrictions? If you put on restrictions then every site will give a different answer because of the way they handle that part of the process is variable.
For the most accurate estimate work out how many units are being used and do the figures by hand once you have narrowed it down using the websites search engines.

All the EDF companies (SWEB, LE and, er, the other one) can be joined from out of area. It is not totally unrestricted but pretty close.

  • Just checked again with London energy and it should be fine - apparently they dont actively advertise the online version 3.1 tarriff which for my parents would make the best deal, but it is available and the regionality shouldnt be a problem.

They did say it wouldn't be on the London Energy website either, just via comparison sites like uswitch etc (it is on simplyswitch - last time checked!)

My only other query is that there are 3 versions of the same tarriff - all have the same savings but the difference is in the name - ondon energy, SWEB energy and Seeboard energy. Not sure entirely what difference this would make as i think it all comes under the umbrella of EDF?

Yes the online tariff is only available through the swotching sites and is cheaper than the tariff quoted on London Energy's own website. However when the Welcome Letter arrives it does contain a prices leaflet for the online tariff. It seems to cover about 8 different areas throughout the UK.

London energy, SWEB energy and Seeboard energy as you say all come under the EDF umbrella so prices are the same but they each have their own CS and phone numbers as far as I'm aware. So possibly they may be different for service.

I moved to London Energy about 6 weeks ago and have been happy with their service so far, better at answering emails than BG. Their online account area seems quite clear and their CS number is 0800. I also save £25pm. :j
  • Yes i have spoken to London Energy a couple of times on the phone and they seem ok - admittedly they are the sales dept - but i dont have anything to judge SWEB and Seeboard Energy by - so any feedback is welcome. If it all works out then a saving of almost £200 a year will be achieved.

Also, am i correct in thinking that bills wont necessarily go down - my thinking is that they will not increase as much if compared to sticking to the current tarriff? Does that make sense?
