I'd recommend downloading, updating and scanning with Spybot Search & Destroy (link). If that finds nothing, then fine - don't worry too much.

The following steps assume you run Windows XP:
    • Start menu > Run > type in explorer %tmp%. A new window should open, with the folder/address similar to this: C:\Documents and Settings\UserNamel\Local Settings\Temp - UserName, in italics, will be the username.
    • Select and delete ALL files and folders. If it cannot delete any files, just skip to the next file and continue to delete the remainder. Close the explorer window once you've finished.
    • Start menu > Run > type in explorer %windir%\temp. Another new window should open, and the address/folder should be similar to C:\WINDOWS\Temp. Again delete all files and folders where possible.

Download, install and run RegSeeker (link). Unload any and alll the programs loaded before running RegSeeker. When RS is loaded, click Clean the Registry on the left-hand side then click Ok. When it's finished, click the Select button at the bottom, then choose Select All. Then click Action > Delete selected items. When it asks for a backup name, just click Ok.

Immediately restart the computer as normal.

Download, install and run BootVis (link). When BootVis opens, go to the Trace menu and select Optimize System. Do NOT touch the computer - let it restart, and let BootVis load up. It might take 5-10 minutes in extreme cases, but I assure you it almost always has positive effects the first time you run it.

With any luck, the above may speed things up a little bit.

I would consider upgrading the chipset drivers, if possible.
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.
  • no it definately isn't there. I hadn't realsied it had been installed as this is not my computer and would not have expected for it to be unistalled previously as my neighbour doesn't really know how to do ths and just uses her computer for messenger and yahoo and games.
I'm surprised I couldn't find it and until you mentioned it in your post I would not have known!

I dont think it can scan anyways. So install AVIRA :)
Whats causing it to be ultra slow is the sheer lack of RAM now.

  • the cc cleaner found 256 registry issues, I have created a backup as it recommended then got it to fix the problems. most seemed to refer to missing paths.
The temp files, etc also done, found a bit of a mess but also cleaned it up, thanks
she has all her passwords saved independantly off her computer so not worried about cookies so all also deleted

In future, you (they) can untick whatever you DONT want to delete (eg, cookies)

  • thanks for all the help
you lot have been stars and youve saved me hours of googling stuff so thanks :-)
hope you all have a great xmas
    I'm off for a drink.

My neighbour is going to run things as normal, messenger, mail and probably a few java games so will see what it is like now a load of crap is gone.

If it is still sluggish which it seems to be ok right now we will look into getting more ram as from googling it doesn't appear too expensive but will need to check what type etc.

as she is considering getting a laptop soon anyway might not need to do so but I guess might as well do it if not too expensive.
