For my elderly father with Alzheimer’s I previously had the cable box wired to the television as follows
DIGI CABLE IN, DIRECT TO SET TOP BOX (STB)
TV AERIAL CABLE IN TO STB
BLACK RF CABLE FROM STB TO TELEVISION
Initially when scart leads were used, all the channels were showing the cable station. Even the Virgin engineer tried to change this. This meant dad only had a choice of 1.
Sadly, dad’s Alzheimer’s meant he could really handle two remotes, so the RV system worked. At least the system meant dad had a choice of 6 channels, ie 5 terrestrial and the cable, whatever we had put for him..
Later I added a DVD, a hand me down from our daughter’s house. This was connected directly with the TV, using a single scart lead. When I turn on the DVD, every TV channel shows this, but as I or my wife is with my dad full time, that isn’t a problem. To get back to the choice of 6, we just turn off the DVD.
With Christmas now upon us, I wanted to re-connect dad’s old video, but need a bit of advice on cables etc, hence this posting.
Also, once connected, how is the tuning done, as I have lost the manuals.
Video is a Panasonic NV HD600 model
Any help would be appreciated and would certainly make Christmas a little better for my dad. He used to be a keen painter and has several videos of past TV programmes which would cheer him up

Hi KK21
The way to connect the video is after the cable box.
Aerial -> cable box -> video -> telly
The video should have an aerial in and out on the back. There is an online manual at https://www.panasonic.co.uk (NV-HD600) if you need to check.
The default video output is on channel 36. You need to tune a tv channel to this frequency.
You may have another signal on channel 36. In this case you need to change the channel that the video uses, that procedure is in the manual. If you think that this is the case (interference, bad picture etc), connect the video to the tv on its own and tune it in. (Video -> tv only)
I think the reason that the DVD takes preference is that the TV is set up to detect a signal from the DVD and automatically show it. This may be able to be turned off. What model of TV is it?
I hope that you can get it sorted.
LuckHe who knows all the answers has not yet been asked all the questions.0 -
Well I've tried to join everything, well I've left off the DVD for now as I'm one scart lead short.
The TV seems OK, when the video is turned off, the TV has BBC1 - Channel 5 as before, plus 6 the digital channel .... so that's OK
However, if I turn the video on, for some reason only the first 4 terrestrial channels show, no channel 5. 6 is still the digi channel. But that’s not really too much of a problem
However if I put in a video and push play I hear the audio no problem, but all I see on the TV is white screen, with the word Panasonic along the top.
Any suggestions please ???:rotfl:
Recap, on my new wiring setup
scart 1, from top video scart socket to bottom digi box socket
scart 2 is from top digi box socket to bottom tv socket
RV1 from digi box to video
RV2 from video out to TV0 -
(1)
Just downloaded a manual for the video. There is a test switxh at the back, which was on. Putting it off means I can see the video playing. That's really the main thing.
I'll still have to fathom out how I can tape new things, for the terrestrial or cable channel
(2)
I found another scart lead, so have added the DVD. scart lead direct to the TV and as it worked OK before I just assumed everything would be OK again
Sadly, that's not the case
If I push play n'out happens on the TV. previously, every channel would change to show the DVD picture
Any ideas please0 -
I think the problem you have is a 'feedback loop' created by the aerial lead into the tv from the video/digi box
Plug scart 1 of digi box into scart 2 of the video. And scart 1 of the video into the tv (The chances are scart1 on the tv will give a better picture than scart 2 as it will be RGB, so if you want best picture on dvd plug that into Scart 1 on the tv and select RGB in the dvd setup menu. If you prefer a better digital tv then plug the video into scart 1 and select RGB in the setup menu.)
Aerials ~
Its more trail and error but take the lead out of the tv for now. If it works then you need an aerial SPLITTER (to split the signal into 2 seperate leads ~ one to the video and one to the tv)
To record to the digi box you need to record AV2
To watch digi tv switch the video OFF and switch digi box ON. The tv should automatically display the digi channels. If it doesnt then select Av1 or AV2 on the tv. Exact same for the dvd player (depending on which socket its plugged into):idea:0 -
95 % of everything is working OK now.
The DVD scart wasn’t in tight enough to the TV. When I turn the DVD on I have to push the AV button on the TV remote, but everything works
Thanks to everybody who offered help.
Only problem now is I can't find the video remote.
using the TV remote (also Panasonic) which has a few buttons at the base for a video, I can operate the video OK, but only channels 1-4 are working on the video
I can therefore tape from
BBC1, BBC2, ITV or Channel 4
I don't know how I can re-tune the video to channel 6 (the digi channel) without the proper remote.
One last thing, Q-Link a quick way to record is supposed to operate as both the TV and video are Panasonic, but I don't really know what that is supposed to do or indeed how it should operate.0 -

Just so your aware. Your not supposed to watch digi channels through the aerial lead (channel 6 as you call it)
Your supposed to use the SCART lead (av 1 or 2 on the tv)
Also, when analogue tv is turned off youll HAVE to use the digi for ALL channels anyways):idea:0 -
Thanks for that aliEnRIK, but my dad dues to his illness is not able to handle too many buttons, so having 1-5 then 6 as the cable channel gives him some choice. When fitted correctly, all channels were showing the cable station. He didn't understand that he had to change the channels using the cable remote. To him BBC has been 1 for years etc etc. To try and make it 101 was beyond him. That's why it has been set up that way. Although my wife or I are with him at all times, we still let him chane the TV to whatever he wants0

I completely understand (And sympathise)
But when Analogue is turned off then youll have the same problem anyways (As well as the video being useless at recording normal analogue channels)
channel 101? Im assuming you mean Virgin or Sky then? (As far as I know ALL digi freeview boxes are normal 1 to 5 etc)
If AV1 or 2 is selected ALL the time then it should be a simple case of using the digi box remote instead:idea:0
