So I have a new clutch....
Ok I am a young driver with my first car (an oldie! 1991 ford fiesta). Yday I had to get my clutch replaced because it was dead... but the car has only done 50k miles.
Now the problem didn't start with me - when I got the car the clutch was just so loose etc. and now its crazily card to handle because its new, so on that basis, I didn't start it.
However I would like to know what actually wears the clutch so I won't have to get one in another 50k miles
Thanks!

clutch wear doesnt really have much to do with mileage, its the type of miles
i have had cars with over 200k on the clock all with the same clutch, as i do motorway miles
lots of stop start/ heavy driving will wear em out
i would imagine that clutch will last longer than the car now0 -
A lot of people ride the clutch without knowing it, they rest the foot gently on the clutch pedal thus wearing it out quicker. This also stretches the cable. Apart from pulling away and slow moving traffic, try to get into the habit of getting your foot back on the floor.
I do a lot of driving at work and my leg would ache if i held foot over clutch pedal all day. Can easily do 1000 miles per week and not once have i needed to have a new clutch fitted. Other drivers have, so it must be their driving style.
Nearly all cars as you look at the pedals, left to right go down in order. So clutch will be highest, brake will be slightly lower and accelerator is lowest. Worth checking periodically as cables do stretch and its easy adjustment under bonnet.0 -
I had a brand new clutch put into an old maserati a few years ago, wasn't high mileage, but it was italian, and quite high performance.
on driving out of the garage, it went again, and had to be replaced.
memories...Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?0 -

Traffic lights uphill, Rush hour - This is the time when your Clutch is working the hardest.
Just go easy, And make smooth adjustments in gear.
What's the rush? When Clutches can cost a 'Bomb'
A mate of mine has a SAAB 900 - That can cost upto 900.00 for a new clutch.
Ford Mondeo new clutch - 300.00.
Or from 'Scrappers' cheaper, But fit it yourself.Thomson 757 Man0
