Plasterboard Coving

Anyone know a website where I can learn how to cut the mitres for the corners when I put up PB Coving? Also, is "No more Nails" a suitable adhesive?

    Hi

I've no experience of doing this myself, so can't give you any practical tips.

However there's some info here, including details of mitre tools, blocks and suitable adhesives.

The link gives info on Artex & Gyproc products only, so check carefully the make, size and profile of your coving before starting.
This page gives some idea of what's involved.

Give yourself plenty of room to work in and take it slowly. I'm sure it'll look great when it's finished :)
    Good luck!

Wickes do a plastic corner template for £1.99. Worked well for me.

Also, you need coving adhesive. Don't use no-nails.

Have you thought of NOT using coving??

When we had our walls re plastered, not just to save £$£$£, we left it off & it does look very neat & smart!

  • Did my last house with the coving and the best thing I found was you can buy the polypropelene corners in B & Q. (In a brown coloured box).

All I did was get a saw and use the corners as a template and the joint was spot on.

The corners are only a few quid but it did save all the hastle by using a mitre saw or the mitre plastic template. I wasted a lot of money by cutting the wrong mite with the saw and plastic template.

I am no DIY guru, I found it did the job for me.

I guess this isn't so relevant for coving, but my father gave me the following tip about mitres:

"if your mitres do not fit, fill them up with glue and s**t"

    Always worked for me!!

  • Hi Oxter

I have done numerous rooms with PLASTER Coving (127mm) and it looks nice. I have always bought the coving from Wickes as it's cheaper and good quality. I also used the ready made adhesive (Wickes make) which works fine.

Regarding cutting mitre joints, I found a PLASTIC type guide Orange in colour looks like a V shape that's great and easy to use. It's also only couple of pounds. Bought this from Homebase.

For cutting I always use a Jet Saw bought from B&Q for about £7 ish pounds. This was a well recommended saw from the consumer mag WHICH.

Once your plaster is up, leave for a day or so, then fill up the holes with adhesive again. Use small nails to keep it securely in place during this time.

When filled, leave for another day, sand away later, paint and job done.

Good Luck with your project. It's not too hard.

Yeah! I got one of those from my local decorating store for about £1.75 and it saved a lot of hassle.
    Also, you need coving adhesive.
Or, as one of the staff suggested at my local decorating store, tile adhesive!

I don't know how it compares with coving adhesive with regard price or ease of use, but when I fitted plaster coving for the first time a few months ago, it was spot on.
  • Thanks everyone - I've found this thread really helpful and I'm not dreading the prospect of doing my coving anymore! ;D
