Ikea oak worktop and B & Q units

This is probably a silly question but can you fit Ikea oak worktops onto B & Q units?

Is it easy to cut the oak worktops? Can you do it with a jigsaw or do I need something else? It would just be a straight cut, so nothing fancy.

I would do it with a fixed circular saw, rather than a jigsaw....well I certainly wouldn't trust myself to cut a perfectly straight line with a jigsaw anyway!

Not sure about your first question but I THINK that Ikea kitchen units are standard sizes - in which case should be fine.

  • The cut edges are going to go against a wall or cooker. If there were any imperfections, I would plane or sand them off. Is it a good idea to plane the IKEA oak worktop?

will require a good quality jigsaw

i would not recommend a circular for hob and sink cut outs as if it slips you run the risk of ruining the worktop

i use a dewalt plunge saw and rail to do cut outs

ikea worktop is 626mm deep and suitable for non-ikea units

I can confirm the worktops will fit. I have just fitted some to our new Ikea kitchen.

  • Easy to cut with a jig saw and like you say, plane it smooth after if necessary. As the Ikea tops are slightly deeper, you will get a nice overhang at the front, you could also use a router to give a rounded front edge.

Remember to seal the underside well before fitting, use something like Danish Oil to coat all sides and edges, not the stuff Ikea sell, it does not give a good durable finish IMHO.

Ikea worktops are 62 cm deep, whereas standard worktops available from B&Q are 60cm deep, so they're totally compatible, but will have a much larger overhang - which could look a bit odd. You could always use the circular saw to trim the back if you don't like the overhang - just remember to seal any cut edges, a couple of applications of PVA wood glue watered down should do the job.
