Not exactly a retailer, I know, but friends of ours in Ireland are distraught at the news that Dell is pulling out with the loss of almost 2,000 jobs on its own Limerick site and the knock-on loss of at least the same number in the Limerick area as a result. Our friend's son was involved in Dell's haulage contract which in turn is involved with etc etc.

Ultimately many a small shop or business is going to go down as Dell escapes to Poland.

Same thing's happening here: the High Street closure of a smaller retailer is the last bit of an iceberg that crumbled many miles from it. Shame.

May be too late for Dell anyway. They didn't react quickly enough to the Chinese threat.

Apparently Sofa Workshop have already issued notice of intention to appoint an administrator but did so last month and to date have not done so.

Land of Leather are waiting for the results of their sale due next week (sale results not sale) before deciding if to call in admins.

    All from the grauniad.

One Iceland is close to us. Yippee :) We will now go there (at some loss to the big supermarkets) but it will also mean we will shop in that town. That is one thing that can be said for Iceland - they pick sites where you are likely to cross shop in other smaller local outlets as well.

Good for the smaller towns they're buying in but I find it odd that they made an offer for all of them as some ex-woolworths are nowhere near suitable for their stores.I would also say theres no way you could do your full shop there (just been to one this morning funnily enough - don't need a full shop so popped to Iceland and Aldi) and you might have the same problem of lugging bags around.

I wouldn't do a full shop there. We have a big chest freezer so we'll go once every month. We go now about once every six months because of the sheer distance. I feel like you about Lidl. Never been to an Aldi. Supermarkets won't completely lose due to convenience. However, those without jobs and with more time might shop around between the three. They are certainly a lot cheaper.

    Who would've thunk it?

BBC: Land of Leather in administration

Retailer Land of Leather has called in administrators after attempts to sell the firm and raise extra money failed.

The company said it had made every effort to cut costs but that market conditions remained tough and January sales had been "very disappointing".

"We have taken a number of steps both to protect customers and to inform them of how the administration affects their circumstances."

All those who either paid a deposit by credit card or Visa debit card, or who have paid a deposit by any means since 26 December are fully protected, said Deloitte.

Meanwhile customers who paid a deposit by cash or by a non-Visa debit card before 26 December will be offered a discount on other stock if their original order cannot be fulfilled.

Is it a Visa debit card?
