PC Board Temperature

I have a Dell 530S with a Dual Core E7200 processor. I was checking the system configuration using SiS Sandra Lite and noticed it was reporting Board Temperature too high at 84C. (The CPU temperature is 32 - 35C, the system fan 1607 rpm and the aux fan 880rpm). I don't know if this is recent or if it has always run (or reported to run) this hot as I've never checked before (the PC is about 3 months old).

I installed a passively cooled Nvidia 7200GS 256MB last week, just to take the load off the integrated graphics (the Windows Experience score dropped!) and to provide digital video output. Sandra reports the video card CPU running at 59C (hot, but probably not excessively so for a passively cooled card) - could this be contributing to the (reported) high temperature?

Any views? The PC seems to be running fine.

I prefer to use speedfan for temperature monitoring and fan speed control. This reports 10 temperature sensors, some are at 127C and are probably incorrect.
My guess is to open the case and direct an external desk fan onto the motherboard. If the temperature drops from 85 then it was a real reading. You may have to try and improve the airflow through your case.

I've tried a couple of these programs, and also seen unexpected figures, including a fan running at about 50,000rpm.
    Try Speedfan as above.
I have an old system and Motherboard Monitor although it's pretty outdated worked the best, can't remember how to set it up, but you put in the actual motherboard model and it selects settings from a database.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • everest for temps, realtemp for quad core cpus, speedfan is also ok for duals.
nvidia card @ 59 is ok, my 9800gtx is running @ 70-72 constantly (often 24/7) under 100% load, I've had my 8800Gt at 102 (bought a new cooler to fix that!)
check the temps in the BIOS, though even that can report wrongly :(

is sandra's board temp sensor Northbridge? if it is, you can buy some funky cooling solutions! (sadly, I can't cos my cpu coole is in the way) :)

  • Maybe your heatsink is very dusty and clogged up.? A can of compressed air works wonders.

    On a more general note.

I've just had a look at Gizmos site, and they suggest for home use, SIW.

Downloaded, installed, had to re-boot to get it to work, but it certainly threw up loads of info, some quite surprising.

I assume that your Dell has an Intel motherboard and that temperature reading is coming from the ICH (AKA Southbridge) chip. I was setting up a couple of computers at work recently with this kind of board and noticed in the BIOS the temperature seemed very high. I did a bit of Googling at the time and found that this is not unusual for these boards.

Do not trust these software apps to give the right information. Unless you enter it manually, they make assumptions about the temp sensor and frequently get it wrong.
