Sainsburys Local are rip-offs

Options
For months, I've been looking forward to a Sainsburys local opening down the road from me, little did I know how much more expensive they are compared to my superstore

e.g. 2 Tropicana juices = £3 vs £3.60
Muller Yoghurts, 5 for £3 vs £4.20

I was expecting 5-10% more to account for the smaller stores and quite happy to pay that amount as a "convenience tax" but this is such a blatant rip-off.

Guess its back to my ol Superstore.

It's well known that in proportion, costs for small shops are far higher than for large stores. Power, staffing, utilities, security, etc are all proportionally higher for a small shop. Sadly 5-10% more just doesn't cut it at all. In a small shop, people spend less as they're only going for the odd item forgotten and there aren't the opportunities to cross-sell the higher margin items due to lack of space. If you want convenience, it has to be paid for.

exactley, your paying for the convenience of a shop nearby that you can walk to, we have a tesco express nearby but the prices for things in there could be more expensive than 1 of the 2 larger tescos nearby but i dont moan about the price as its a convenience shop and so the price is likely to be more than a larger tesco

And not to forget they are ruining small independent businesses like convenience stores. An old friend of my Dad is now worried about his convenience store ever since Tesco's express opened up nearby. Their numbers are also growing prolifically

I think the part that annoys me most is that by keeping with the Sainsburys name, a reasonable person could assume that the prices would be similar across the group. It is also very interesting that their prices make my local organic market look cheap!

well im a reasonable person and i dont expect the prices for stuff in a tesco express to be the same price as in a larger tesco, a tesco express/sainsburys local are exactly that convenience shops, if your that desperate for bread, milk, meat that you forgot to get from a larger supermarket then you pay the little extra as the stores have larger overheads to pay
  • My Tesco Express sell things for 3% more expensive than the superstore 3 miles away. Bargain, IMHO.

  • Sainsburys Local normally pack your items for you but when I asked them to pack my items in reusable Sainsburys bags that are much better for the environment they got all stroppy and told me to do it myself. I normally pack my own shopping in the normal branch so it isn't a big deal. However, that was the final straw on the paying more front so I don't go there any more.

How is it a rip off?
You didn't buy anything so you were not ripped off.
Even if you did buy them at that price, you would be making a choice so once again, would not have been ripped off.
