So far we have tried 6 players from sainsburys and tesco in the last 3 months. All have frozen, jumped or refused to play a menu. These were the cheap ones Red tesco own or tecknika.
Can anyone recommend a current player that is good quality please
by the way - seasons greetings

I did the same - finally settled on the Toshiba one from Tesco - about £24 - the Sd-170 or similar
As a bonus the remote control even has a vaguely logical layout
and also the current one they have also does Divx (mine doesn't)
picture & 1 review (not mine) here0 -
You can try the Samsung F1080 for £53 with gold HDMI cable, it's not the cheapest one to find but it is a very good model and sleek design too click HERE for Amazon.
I install systems and have sold about 10 of them in the past 6months still when they cost £99 and never had a problem0 -
I recommend the Philips 5990. It has hdmi and scart and can upscale to 1080p. It also plays Divx/XviD its around £55 on Amazon. I got two and it works brilliantly even playing files from a usb flash drive
The Philips 5980 is good one my daughter has one of them does the above but only to 1080i0 -
Presumably you don't want to spend over-much...
As mentioned above, this Toshiba from Tesco looks good as a basic player, and there's a multi region hack for it too, if you need it.
What kind of TV are you connecting up to?0 -
I like panasonic stuff, a bit more expensive but worth it and you can get them multi-region as well (mines is)0
