Water leak from cold-water kitchen sink pipe (PICTURES INCLUDED).

Hi,

My cold-water pipe, under the sink, has developed a leak and I'm not sure how I can stop it.

It seems to be leaking from the join between the two components, shown in the pictures. One is some kind of valve (I guess to relieve the water pressure if it builds up in the mains) and has a 'tap' of some kind and the other is a hose, which I think leads to the plastic pipe which drains the water outside.

A local DIY shop owner said the leak was probably due to a degraded rubber washer and sold me some replacement ones, but I'd like a second opinion before I drown myself.

Should I, also, turn off the water at the Stop C-ock before doing anything?

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

this looks like the pipe to your washing machine or dishwasher.the blue part is the tap to turn it off, it just turns half a turn. there is a washer under the large white nut which may be slightly loose, it needs a firm turn clockwise usually strong hand or a grip, but not to tight. If you want to change the washer turn blue knob then big white nut anticlockwise, you can turn the tap off at the main but its not necessary. the pipes look quite new so I guess the white nut needs tightening clock wise. ..regards..bri

The tap in your photo is a washing machine isolating/service valve. Your hose looks like a washing machine/dishwasher cold feed ? Or it could be to an outside tap? Doesn't look like any sort of pressure relief I've ever seen.

It is very common for these types of hose joints to leak. Sometimes they just need tightened up, or a new washer might do the trick. Failing both of these buy a new hose, but ensure you don't cross thread the hose end as you put it on.

Good advice from the previous posters, but if its only a few drops ( not a stream of water,) AND you don't seem that confident. Stick a bowl underneath and leave it alone until after boxing day.

    Thanks, everyone.

I think the blue hose is the dish-washer cold feed and it's the rubber washer which is responsible for the leak.

The only reason I thought the other section was a valve of some kind was that it looks like this: http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Plumbing+Heating/Valves/Isolating+Valve+Handled+15mm/d20/sd2696/p67155
I guess mine is just an open/close tap.

Anyway, I have a bowl under the leak and will leave it 'til after Christmas.

It's just an isolator to the washing machine or dish washer. If you turn the blue valve handle through 90 degrees. It should do the trick and isolate the supply. If you want to be doubly sure then turn the water off at the mains. As has been said, it is probably only the washer inside the white connector. Or it might just be that the connector is loose. Try turning it clockwise by hand.

I had not noticed the brown tape. If anyone has used that , then it was a bodger who did it. By the way, congratulations on a good set of pictures. Others take note please.
