Buying gold - websites to recommend

I have just started to research this subject. I know it has been on MSE site a few times of course.
I specifically wanted to ask about www.bullionvault.com
Has anyone used it and can they recommend it?

  • They give you a free gram, if the dow drops to 1 ounce of gold it might even be worth paying the withdrawal fee

Not regulated by the fsa are they

nope, as far as I know there is no regulation of the bullion markets like securities.

  • So gold futures or an etf would be considered safer then this? I just wonder about how safe an internet company is when little is known about it

I reckon its best to actually have the gold in hand personally, Im sure thats more like what they do in really insecure parts of the world
  • thanks for the answers:) I think you are right about better having physical custody of the gold! I thought the site interesting and posted because I wondered if anyone had actually used it.

Eh, generally physical gold would be considered safer than paper gold, so I suppose you have to address the trust issue with the firm you use. Keeping about £50K of gold in the house probably isn't a really good idea ;)

  • Anyone bought gold coins?
What % costs incurred buying and selling
  • I am resident in TR now and gold is a popular investment there. I have seen quite a few coins and a friend of mine has a number of these which she sold recently when she needed the money. As there is a high burglary rate wher we live, many people keep jewellery and small valuables in bank safe deposits. I can't imagine anyone who would invest in physical gold there would have it lying around the house:))
Also, interestingly, Garantibank here does a Gold Account that does not consist of bullion trade but in the trade of shares that it says 'mirror' the market movements of bullion. I don't use Garantibank since they always have such queues but to be honest, if I were going to invest in gold I would invest in say, coins here, and keep them over a long period of time. I presume this is the point of investment in gold since the gold price has been dropping for several days so I don't see its value as an income producing asset.
