Panasonic 42" Plasma & Optical cable.

We have a Panasonic TH-42PX60B Plasma tv. I have just bought a Panasonic Home Cinema system. I also bought an Optical Digital cable. I can't for the life of me see where this goes on the TV. There is an OPTICAL IN on the DVD but not on the TV - not that I can see...

I was using the Audio Out before (with the red & white attachments) so we could watch the TV through our previous speakers. Can anyone please help me? I also bought the HDMI cable - but I can see where that goes.

Many thanks

Are you sure the TV's actually got an optical output?

Optical connections are far more common between a DVD player and AV amp. My Sky+ box has optical out, too.

Silly question: does you TV have an optical out?

What are you using to watch TV (Sky, Virgin, freeview, etc)?

How do you have whatever you're using connected to the TV?

I have looked at the back of the TV & can't see anything with Optical Out on it. I presumed as the TV was HD ready & only quite new, that it would have one. My Sky+ box has one - just looked. Could I use that OPTICAL Out connection to connect to my new surround sound system?

    Thanks

Yes, connecting it to your Sky box would be the best way. Your TV probably isn't being supplied with a surround sound signal anyway, so it would be rather pointless to hook it up to it.

    Yes.

At the moment Freeview is only broadcast in stereo, so there wouldn't normally be any real need for a TV to have a digital audio output.

Use digital connections (i.e. your optical cable) to hook your DVD player, Sky/Virgin box, Xbox/PS3 etc. to your AV amplifier.

One more thing, please - Does the HDMI cable replace the Scart lead?

    Cheers

Yes, the use the HDMI instead of scart where possible.

There's probably an option on the DVD player to disable sound output through the HDMI cable, so you might need to check that according to your requirements.

OK so HDMI from DVD to TV. Should I then use a Scart from Sky+ to DVD - or just the Optical cable?

    Thanks again

    no
Scart from Sky+ to tv, optical from Sky+ to your amplifier
