Hello
Every time I run a scan with skybot search and destroy it keeps returning two problems.I fix the problems each time but when I run s&d after a start up they return.
These are the problems that keep returning.Windows security center firewall disable notice and windows security center antivirus disable notice.
Could someone please tell me why these problems are returning and how to fix them for good.
I run nortons internet security, adaware se,ms antispyware, ewido and spyware blaster.
Only spybot S&D picks up a problem. Is it the norton security center causing the problem? Please help.
Thanks

Hi Browntoa
The two problems that show are;
Windows security center.AntiVirusDisableNotice
registry change
Windows security center.FirewallDisableNotice
registry change
I have run the S&D scan in safe mode with no joy.sometimes you're the pigeon, sometimes you're the statue!0 -

Windows likes to be able to alert you when you have your firewall and antivirus turned off. The messages you are getting via S&D are from the registry settings that are set to disable any kind of warning that the firewall and antivirus are turned off (if they were enabled you would get pop ups in the corner of your screen alerting you). It isn't any form of spyware as such, it is just S&D seeing the disabling of those notifications as something you wouldn't want.
I have the notifications turned off as well as I have other security settings and they show up in S&D each time I run it too.
I don't know if there is a way to remove them from coming up in a search, I think there was a similar case in the past and the next update of S&D recognised the mistake and stopped the errors from showing up.
If you don't have any kind of firewall or antivirus etc though I would recommend you get one just to be on the safe side, there are a lot of free ones out there such as Zone Alarm and Sygate Personal Firewall (both firewalls) and AVG or Avast (anti virus scanners)0 -

I'll be taking your recommendations on antivirus/firewall as soon as my subscription with nortons comes to an end.Nothing like a good freebie.:)sometimes you're the pigeon, sometimes you're the statue!0 -

oh yea, my bad
It's strange that Windows isn't recognising Nortons as the antivirus software, I'm not sure what to suggest other than to be sure you have all your updates for both windows and nortons which I'm assuming you do.
Maybe take a look in the Windows Security Center via control panel and see if you can get windows to recognise it that way.
If nortons is running fine though I wouldn't worry too much about it.0 -

Windows does know norton is there but the windows firewall and anti virus system gets switched off when norton is there ! for some reason spybot then thinks that the registry keys that windows has for " firewall switched off " is spyware its totally normal for spybot since SP2 has come out and normally only happens on branded pc's for example packard bells , emachines, advent etc.If it doesn't fit, force it; if it breaks, it needed replacement anywaySarcasm helps keep you from telling people what you really think of them

Try doing the reverse of this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/sp2_disableavalerts.mspx
if you have a Norton firewall enabled, then this may disable the windows firewall, which will cause the message.
Some Malware infections also turns off these functions as well..
Is your norton upto date?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
If you want to test that your AV software is working, you can use the eicar test file.

This is not a virus, it is a method that should work with all scanners to test whether the antivirus software has been disabled by malware, or isn't functioning properly.
