As far as bios updating is concerned, if it's not broke -don't fix it.
It's not a process for the "ordinary punter" and it's very easy to mess up.
And if does mess up, it's very possibly a new motherboard because it's generally very difficult to gain access to messed up bios.
I can't believe anyone would recommend it to an "ordinary punter"

Anyway, as far the memory, make sure the memory sticks are working first by testing them one at a time.
Then make sure that both brackets / sockets are working by putting the memory you know is working into each socket, one at a time.

Also check the bios also to see how much system memory is used by graphics.
  • much as I do like vista, I'm not sure I'd install it on a 2Ghz celeron, infact, I know that i wouldn't consider it. Stick with XP SP3 until you upgrade the rest of the machine

    I'd assume the OS.
However I love Vista... :D Ram is very important with vista, and think it should run fine on a 2.0 ghz celeron...
  • From personal experience running a game (Counter Strike Source)

My laptop speed is about 1.6ghz Core Duo with 1024mb ram

With Vista the game was unplayable at 800x600, even with all of Vista's stuff turned. with XP the game is playable at 1600x1024.

In terms that average Joe would understand my laptop runs about 10x quicker with XP than Vista ipso facto back up your hard drive and install XP.
    Buy for value not cost.

Well celerons aren't renowned for being fast, they are a budget processor

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501with 2gb of ram and a Turion X2 TL-50 (1.6ghz) not the fastest processor and Vista Ultimate and it runs fine on it.
  • ^ + your 1.6ghz core2 owns the 2ghz celeron
