freezing mouse?

a short time after starting my computer and surfing etc, my mouse freezes (arrow icon)
i have to restart my computer and then it starts working again.
i have to switch off my pc from the back button to turn it off, as mouse will not move the icon, so i cannot switch it off any other way.
any advice appreciated.

My Dad reported the same problem to me this morning! Probably just a coincidence.

I don't have anything to suggest as such - I'm sure others soon will - but I would suggest using the keyboard to shut down your PC instead of switching it off by the switch. That doesn't do the computer any good at all!

One way of doing this is as follows:
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del - this brings up the Windows Task Manager.
Press Alt - you will notice the File menu is highlighted.
Press the right hand arrow key three times (scrolling through the menu headings) until you reach the Shut Down menu.
Press the Down arrow until you reach the Turn Off option.

It should be fairly obvious from there.

I'll be watching this thread for any clues for my Dad's mouse!

EDIT: Even easier way of shutting down with the keyboard:

Press the Windows button (between the Ctrl and Alt buttons on the left) - this brings up the Start menu.
Press the Up arrow once, so the Turn Off Computer... option is highlighted.
Press Enter. Should be fairly obvious from there. You can switch between the options (Shut down, hibernate...) by pressing the Tab button (above the Caps Lock).

Crikey - must be the time of year - but mine started doing this a few days ago - maybe they hibernate in winter?? :rotfl:

In the end I changed it to a different USB port and this seems to have cured it for now. :T

I know this probably doesn't address the OP's issue, but I started having a problem with my old Microsoft PS/2 mouse a few weeks ago when using the central scroll wheel to scroll up and down a web page, such as an MSE forum page with lots of posts. It would start off scrolling ok and then it would go completely haywire with the page's contents flying up and down rapidly.

Yesterday I removed the round cover from the bottom of the mouse and took the ball out, then shone a small pen-light into the guts of the mouse. I could see that there was a veritable haystack of dust and debris wound around the mechanism that the scroll wheel attaches to and this was presumably interfering with the optical sensor inside.

Half an hour's careful 'surgery' with a pair of long-nosed tweezers and the mechanism was fluff free. It is now working perfectly. You never know, a good clean around inside may be the answer to your problems too.

Sometimes the middle scroll wheel can be used as a middle button as well - does it "click" same as the left and right hand buttons ?

Mine is configured when "clicked" during browsing to act as a permanent scroll ( Pointer changes to a circle with up/down arrows in it ) - then by moving the mouse up and down I can move the page. ( In IE7 - doesn't seem to do it in Firefox )

The ones that are freezing - it isn't purely due to needing new batteries I assume? Also, if bluetooth, are there any products close by that can be causing interference - such as mobile phones etc.

it does not take batteries , just connects to pc unit.
i have removed ball and cleaned it, but its still temperemental and works ok, but suddenly out of the blue it stops working.
i will try and clean it again using light and tweezers, to see if i've missed anything.

thanks frugalmacdugal, however, my mouse is just an ordinary serif mouse that connects at back of the pc in a round socket. it does not connect to the usb port., its not an intelli, or optical, or laser one as stated

i recall that it stzrted to happen after i updated new firefox, could that have something to do with it?
