File Views No Longer Sticky
Oblivion

Using XP Pro.
When using any of my several photo editing programs e.g. Paint Shop Pro and Capture, whenever I selected 'File > Open' or 'File > Save As' from the menus, the window that opened showed the existing image files in the chosen destination folder as Thumbnails. Thumbnails were always the default view.
Something has changed in the past few days and I don't what has happened. Now, when I access either of these menu options, the existing image files are shown as a List of named files, not Thumbnails. I can use the View menu to change the view to thumbnails, but it is no longer sticky and the next time I open either, it has defaulted back to List view. Very frustrating.
This problem does not manifest itself when viewing files in Windows Explorer, where whichever view I have selected for any folder remains sticky from one session to the next.
Please does anyone know how I can get the view in the 'File > Open' and 'File > Save As' windows to remain sticky at my chosen view i.e. thumbnails.
Dave.

Is there a "Browse" button in PSP when you've gone to Open? Also is there a "Show Preview" tick box in PSP
Is this useful?

Shortcut: (Ctrl) B
Paint Shop Pro's Browser feature displays the file names of all graphics in a selected directory and renders thumbnail versions of the graphics as illustrated in the following graphic. The visual effect of the Browser is set in File>Preferences>General Preferences>Browser (see Customizing Paint Shop Pro).
The Browser opens in the Paint Shop Pro workspace and replaces the default Menu with a menu exclusive to the Browser as illustrated below.

Hi David and thanks for your response. Unfortunately, none of this helps.
This is definitely a Windows issue since it manifests itself in other software, not just PaintShop Pro which is working fine and, yes the PSP browser works fine too.
Ii's not as if I can't see thumbnails ... I can, when I select thumbnails as a view. So thumbnail rendering is not the problem. The problem is that having selected thumbnails as a view in either the 'File > Open' or 'File > Save As' it no longer remembers that choice of view the next time I open either of those dialogue boxes. In the past, those views have remained 'sticky' from session to session and remained showing thumbnails as a default ... now they always show a file list as a default. None of the links you so kindly offered address this problem I'm afraid.
I've also now noticed that the sizing of windows themselves are not remaining 'sticky' from session to session either. I think something may have got corrupred in the registry or there is some setting in windows that I've inadvertently altered.
I'm also wondering if the fact that I installed the latest security patch from Microsoft just a few days ago might be relevant

Have you tried right clicking Start, select Explore, select any folder and click View -> Thumbnails, then select Tools -> Folder Options... -> View tab, and click Apply to All Folders?0

Yes, I'd tried that before, but to be sure I've just tried it again, restarting as appropriate. It works fine for Windows Explorer where the view remains 'sticky' but still doesn't work for the 'File > Open' or 'File > Save As' windows in my various applications which still doggedly default to a view of 'List' i.e. file names, not thumbnails.
Ah well, looks like I'm stuck with it unless someone knows the specific registry entry that may be at fault. At least everything is still working, just not quite the way I've always been used to.
Thanks for trying to help David, much appreciated

Dare I suggest trying a complete uninstall of one of the apps and then reinstalling it again?

To be honest I don't think a re-install will resolve it if it occurs in numerous apps. Can you try going back into Tools -> Folder Options and resetting back to defaults (Button next to apply)
If not then try creating a new profile, Control Panel -> User Accounts and see if the problem follows you around.0
