Social breakdown after economic breakdown: Iceland

Well we havent had 'non ballot box' democracy in the UK since the Poll Tax riots of the early 90's. Next year there will be many more disgruntled people with more time on their hands, all the ingredients will be in place for the saftey valve to blow IMHO[strike]Debt @ LBM 04/07 £14,804[/strike]01/08 [strike]£10,472[/strike]now debt free:j
Target: Stay debt free0 -
I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see a surge in popularity of the extreme right. I would not be happy about it though.
We're probably about due for some riots again, the point about disgruntled people with time on their hands is very valid IMHO.0 -
It's too cold for riots now and too early, but by next summer I think there will be trouble. Those on the far right will be angry about money being wasted on the 'wrong' people, while those on the left will champion the cause of the 'forgotten underclass.'
It will be a rich feeding ground for extremists of all kinds because there will be many, stripped of the worldly goods which formerly defined them, looking for a cause, and an excuse. Others, who never had much anyway, will just feel extra hard-done-by and feel that they & their communities have little hope.
Those of a criminal persuasion will join either group as it suits them.
If left & right meet up, it could be especially nasty. I've only been in one riot, (Grosvenor Square 1968) and that was one too many.0 -
I don't think civil unrest will happen. Our economy isn't great, granted, but Iceland pretty much went bankrupt - there's a distinct difference.
Besides, aren't we supposed to get a bit more civilised as the years go by? :P0 -

This website is a good source of Icelandic news - basically it's a guy that got laid off and has little to do other than translate the local news stories into English.
Some sad/scary stories there.poppy100 -
yep. agree, clobber. ''idle hands throw stones'. if the rug is pulled under the next generation this is inevitable. I'm a man of the 80's, who can remember the frustration. we even had a rock band; wasted youth.I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see a surge in popularity of the extreme right. I would not be happy about it though.
