Problem pinging server but CAN connect fine

Hi all,

Well its the last day of work before the new year and boy am I looking forward to the end of the day LOL

Basically i've got a bit of a problem that i'm hoping some of you techies can help with.

I am an IT apprentice for a company looking after their internal computer system. Normally I have my manager to ask for help but he's away for a week on holiday before xmas.

Basically the problem is: We are all connected to the work server (obviously lol). We have our H:\ drive on the server which contains any documents needed for work. Its also got a software share. I can access the H drive no problem but when I go to start then run '\\10.*.*.7\software' it is unable to connect. I also can't ping the machine.

I dont understand why though because I can still access the H:\ drive no problem.

Any ideas anyone? I know this isn't an IT forum but its the only forum I post at and I know there's a few IT buffs out there =)

Thanks all

EDIT) Starred out IP address

    1. I wouldn't give out IP addresses, you never know what nasty people are about!

    2. are you sure you are ping in the correct IP address.

    3. you should be pinging an IP address of the server and not the share address

so you should just use the command ping ***.***.**.* which is the IP of the server.

and finally if it's working what's the point in worrying

Yes im just pinging **.**.*.* not **.**.*.*\software

    Yes its definitely right address.

Reason I need to get on is because I need access to the software share but cant connect to it. Only way to access software share is to go...start, run, \\**.**.*.*\software which I cant do atm. I am assuming not being able to ping it is the same problem?

Because of our firewall it wont let us download any software so Its really important i can get access to this. I mean if it doesn't work then there's nothing I can do. Its only 1 more day. Its just it'd be nice for it to work LOL And would make a good impression on my manager LOL

Yes normally access through run command.

Just tried accesing through IE and it just does nothing. It thinks about it for a few seconds then stops.

Is this a firewall issue? You can configure firewalls so that they will only allow pings from specific IP addresses . You can restrict which IP addresses can be used to remotely administer a system. There may be other restrictions that make it a hard slog for hackers to get control.

I will go down to the server room and check the firewall. Its really strange. Friday afternoon it was working no problem. Tried accessing it again yesterday afternoon and it doesn't work.

  • I'd expect the Firewall to be dropping the ICMP packets.

I'd also want to check the share permissions and NTFS permissions... I very much doubt it'll be anything other than these two for accessing \\10.*.*.7\software

    One last thing - it's not hidden is it? I.e. \software$ ?

Can you normally ping it? As davidmt83 says it's quite normal for a firewall to drop ICMP packets anyway.

Do you have direct access to the server so you can log on and check the share permissions?
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

    No need ;)

Runas on compmgmt.msc and remotely connect to check share perms. Runas on a windows explorer window to check the NTFS perms...

Yes I have direct access to the server so I can check share permissions.

Yes normally I can ping no problem. Whenever I want to test someones connection to the network I usually ping the server.

I will do some reading on ICMP packets. I will go and have a look at share permissions first though I think incase it is that =)

Thanks for the suggestions everyons =)
