Fitting the TV picture onto the TV screen

Please help!!
We bought a lovely new Sony 40'' TV over a year ago. We set the thing up ourselves (first mistake!) rather than pay the man from JL.
Anyway, I have put up with the picture being 'too big' for the screen since then, but have finally had enough!! The problem is that the picture is cut off by the screen from all sides. When a program has a phone number at the bottom, it disappears off the bottom. When it says 'press the red button' at the top, only half is visible. When an actors name is at the side of the screen, we usually only see half of their name. Etc etc!!
THis was brought home to me when we recently watched some of Lost on DVD. Amazingly, we realised that Holloway has a first name (Josh!). And all the other actors had first name too.
We played around with a button on the remote that toggles through 'smart, widescreen, 14:9' etc, but they just rearrange the picture we have rather than changing the overall size.
I dont know where the instructions are so can't look them up (and dont think I would be able to understand them anyhow!).
Can anyone PLEASE guide me on what the problem is called and suggest how to rectify it.
Thank you!

Are you viewing the TV through a digital box, such as a Sky Digibox or Cable TV box?
If so you need to tell the box you have a widescreen TV and not a 4:3 TV, by default the digital boxes are set to 4:3 and set to cut the sides off and set SCART control on.
With the TV you want to find the setting that isn't smart, isn't 14:9, movie, just the standard 4:3 setting.
Then put digital box into standby and then back on, when a widescreen programme is shown then the TV will auto-adjust to widescreen.
Note: widescreen programming is only available on digital channels and then not all digital channels, it's not available on analogue, so you'll always get chopped off pictures to the left and right and a slightly letterbox picture. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0
